Prismatic Pages, Oslo's One-of-a-Kind Bookstore, Branches Out into an Independent Publishing House

Oslo's sole English language bookshop Prismatic Pages has forayed into the business of publishing by establishing an independent publishing house, Prismatic Press, which is meant to provide a platform to English language authors in Norway. This has been done as a way of helping authors who often have difficulty getting published with both Norwegian and foreign publishers.

That Quiet Fog by Jay Samuel, an author based in Oslo, was published as the imprint’s first book in April. The book centers on a gay man dealing with his own past through which he is going through some tough moments. “This manuscript really caught my eye and gave me the idea to create this imprint and work with the author.

According to Trigg-Hauger, English language authors who reside in Norway usually have a hard time finding a publisher since few Norwegian publishers actually publish books in English. In an effort to bridge the gap, Prismatic Press is planning to not only work with the local English language authors but also to eventually assist Norwegian authors to get their books published in English overseas.

Prismatic Pages initially launched in December 2023 in the area of Grünerløkka in Oslo. Since then, the store has gained popularity with readers and offers about 3,000 new and used books, primarily diverse literature from women and LGBTQ+ authors.

Although Prismatic Press intends to publish just one book per year at present, the move is in line with the mission of the bookstore to develop English language literary culture in Norway and give voice to people who might not otherwise be heard. The move has also been backed by the local community through funding initiatives.
